Heart patients receive video boost

Heart patients in the region can now cut down on tiring trips to London for appointments -- instead they can be assessed via a new video conference centre. The centre opened yesterday at University Hospital, paid for with a $300,000 donation from Servier Canada Inc., a Quebec-based pharmaceutical company. Doctors and staff from Windsor's Hotel Dieu-Grace Hospital were visible from a screen in the new LHSC board room, demonstrating how the equipment works. "Patients always have to drive up to London for a brief consultation and then drive back again," cardiologist Dr. Rajendra Chetty said from a boardroom in Windsor. The room is equipped with special projectors, screens, microphones, cameras and computers so a doctor in London can can examine charts or X-rays of a patient anywhere. read more.

Research from Arctic territory paving the way for human mission to ...

DEVON ISLAND, Nunavut - They call this place "Mars on Earth," and, for at least another generation, this barren, cratered island not far from the North Pole is as close to the Red Planet as any human being is going to get. The climatic extremes here in the polar desert of Canada's high Arctic resemble what is found in the polar regions of Mars. The geology of the sterile, rocky terrain is similar to that of the Martian surface. Even the water here, most of it perpetually locked in ice beneath the permafrost, closely parallels what scientists believe exists on Mars. Which is why, every summer for the last 10 years, a handful of geologists, astronomers, engineers and NASA researchers have been camping atop the frozen arctic ground here, along the rim of the giant 23 million-year-old Haughton asteroid crater, to begin figuring out how astronauts can one day survive on Mars. read more.

Young coordinators relish opportunity

For someone who insists he isn't affected by the nerves and jitters that would normally accompany a recent hire's first major presentation at work, Ron Prince certainly sounds testy. Asked this week if he was having trouble keeping his emotions in check as he prepared to make his game debut as Kansas State's football coach today against Illinois State, Prince was uncharacteristically short. "It's not like this is the first game I've been to," he said. Virginia coach Al Groh, whom Prince last worked for as an offensive coordinator, spoke with Prince a few times in the past week. They discussed pre-game preparation, time frames and the new rule changes being implemented this season. Groh attempted to explain Prince's mindset Wednesday during the ACC teleconference call. read more.

O'Brien receives one-match ban by match referee

Ireland's Niall O'Brien has been banned for one ICC Intercontinental Cup match after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct and has been warned over his future conduct. O'Brien, the Ireland wicketkeeper, was found guilty of a Level 2 offence during Ireland's ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Scotland in Aberdeen last month. He expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions of the pitch to the groundsman, Ken McCurdie, after heavy overnight rain got under the covers and prevented a restart in play on the third day of the match. David Jukes, the match referee, found him guilty of clause 2.8, which refers to "Using language that is obscene, offensive or of a seriously insulting nature to another player, umpire, referee, team official or spectator. "The heavy rain that ruined a fascinating match was a cause of frustration for everyone concerned but that was no excuse for Mr O'Brien's outburst," Jukes said. read more.

Guerber vouchers reveal double-charges

Board members of the State Historical Society decided in a teleconference Wednesday to keep Steve Guerber as director until an investigation into his use of state money is complete. The society will audit all of Guerber's vouchers and receipts from 2002 through 2005, according to the resolution approved at the meeting. The seven-member board voted unanimously with one board member, Judy Meyer of Hayden Lake, absent. The board instructed Guerber to immediately convene staff meetings to advise all agency employees on the appropriate protocol on the use of travel vouchers and state credit cards. They also told him to provide a detailed written report by Sept. 15 on other agency accounting issues cited in a Legislative Service Office audit. . read more.
